Puerto Rico’s statehood movement is preparing to change strategy.![]()
The New Progressive Party majority in the Puerto Rico House plans to introduce a joint resolution formally asking Congress to pass legislation admitting Puerto Rico as a state, and asking President Donald J. Trump to support the steps necessary to make it happen.![]()
This is not another status referendum.![]()
According to El Vocero, the proposal would make the formal pursuit of Puerto Rico’s admission part of government policy and direct available resources toward advancing that request in Washington.![]()
Governor Jenniffer González Colón has argued that Puerto Rico’s voters have already done their part.![]()
The island has held multiple status votes over the past decade, and in 2024 statehood received 58.61% of the valid votes among the non-territorial options presented to voters.![]()
Now the strategy is shifting from asking Puerto Ricans the same question again to putting the existing mandate directly before the federal government.![]()
The proposed resolution would ask Congress to admit Puerto Rico “on equal footing with the 50 states” and call on President Trump to support that effort.![]()
The measure itself cannot make Puerto Rico a state. Only Congress can authorize admission.![]()
But that is precisely the point.![]()
Puerto Rico’s statehood government is preparing to take the fight to the institution that actually has the authority to finish it.![]()
The voters have spoken. Should Washington finally act?![]()
